What Is 1-up/1-down Tennis?
1-up/1-down tennis pairs a
wheelchair player with an able-bodied player on a doubles team competing
against another doubles team comprised of a wheelchair player and an
able-bodied player. The wheelchair player is allowed two bounces (if he/she
needs it) while the able bodied teammate must hit the ball within only one
bounce. 1-up/1-down tennis can range from purely social matches to highly
competitive sanctioned tournaments. Very few sports allow a disabled athlete to
integrate and compete fairly with their able-bodied peers quite like wheelchair
tennis does, especially when played in the 1-up/1-down format. The CWTF offers
a 1-up/1-down league each year.
